According to police, the leader made the remark on August 15 at a religious event in Shah Panchale village of Sinnar taluka in Nashik district, following which thousands of people gathered and a clash broke out between two groups at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar and Nashik districts.

“Cases have already been registered against the seer in other districts, however, after complainants showed up at our police stations in Mumbai, we registered two cases,” said a police officer.

At Mahim police station, the complaint was filed by 37-year-old Shadab Amir Hasan Ansari, who in his statement to police, said that he was watching television at home, when he came across a video of Mahant Ramgiri Maharaj making derogatory statements about Islam.
“The complainant alleged that the seer made those remarks with an intention to create rift between two communities due to which a case was registered,” an officer said.

Similarly a case was registered at Pydhonie police station and the investigation was transferred to Nashik police.

A senior police officer said, “As the incident has taken place in their jurisdiction, we transferred it to them for further investigation.”
