Nearly 10 days after the Maharashtra government announced closure of the Kabootarkhanas (pigeon houses) in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) generated Rs 55,700 by penalising 107 offenders across 49 different locations and Kabootarkhanas for feeding pigeons. Civic officials said that each offender was penalised Rs 500 for violating the norms.

According to civic officials, the highest penalty of Rs 7,700 was recovered from 16 individuals at Dadar Kabootarkhana. They added that 10 kilogram gains in two gunny bags were also confiscated last week.

This was followed by Rs 4,000 from eight violators at Bandra Talao. As many as 15 individuals were fined across five different locations at Malad east from where around Rs 7,500 was generated in penalties by the authorities.

“Action is being taken after the state legislature passed the resolution earlier this month. We have deployed officials from each of the civic ward offices for penalising violators and this will be an ongoing process,” said an official.

Civic officials also maintained that the action is being taken as per the provision of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) act which mandates imposing a penalty of Rs 500 on citizens found feeding animals and birds in public spaces.

On July 3, the state Assembly banned feeding of pigeons at public spaces in Mumbai, citing public health concerns, including respiratory diseases.
