Railway Minister Mamata Banerjees Budget has 101 new train services for Mumbai,concentrated more in the suburbs and the metropolitan region than on the city proper. Another reason for Mumbaikars to cheer was that fares were not hiked as they had feared.

Of the 101 new services,32 are on the Kalyan-Khopoli and Kalyan Kasara sections,18 on the harbour line and 35 on the trans-harbour section. More and more people have been settling in the suburbs,where property rates are lower than in Mumbai.

Banerjee said Phase I of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project should be completed by this year and Phase II by 2014. The budget,however,did not specify any allocation for Phase II.

The increase in services is nothing new. It was going to happen due to the induction of new Siemens rakes. The first phase of the MUTP will be completed by this year and this will help create space for more services, said Ramchandra Karve of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.

Women travellers will get a Matribhoomi Train (ladies special) each on the the Thane-Vashi line and the Thane-Nerul-Panvel section. In last years Budget,too,Banerjee had added a pair of services on the CST-Panvel section.

Of the 10 stations announced for conversion to world class,Thane was one. Thane will also have an outpatients department (OPD) and diagnostics centre. So will CST,Matheran and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).

The Budget announcements include a study for the proposed linking of CST and Churchgate stations and for construction of a grade separator at Kurla. The Railway Minister had promised such a study during a visit to the city last November.
