A clash between two groups at Akal Garh market on Thursday left three injured and the busy market which is known for whole sale traders closed. The incident broke out between the groups of Sikh Students Federation (SSF)-Mehta and the Youth Akali Dal (YAD). The violence broke out over an alleged picture on Facebook which the Mehta groups claims had been put up by the supporters of the YAD and had tagged the members of the Mehta group as gaddar traitors.

The market which is situated just a few feet away from the Kotwali Police station turned into a war zone after the members of the Mehta groups attacked a shopkeeper with sharp edged weapons and even fired in the air.

ADCP Manjeet Singh Dhesi,ACP Swapan Sharma,Ramneesh Chaudhry,SHO Surinder Mohan and Gurpreet Singh along with police parties immediately rushed to the spot to control the situation which had turned violent after members of the YAD led by their leader Gurdeep Singh Gosha reached the spot.

The injured have been identified as Harvinder Singh Sheru,Jatinder Singh Rinku and Viki. Two arrests have also been made in this case. ADCP Dhesi claimed,“Statements of both the groups have been taken and action will be taken as per the law.”

However,Akal Garh Market Association President Balwinder Singh said, “The whole issue began with this picture. Supporters of Paramjit Singh Khalsa came to Harvinder Singh’s shop and even without talking to him began beating him up with swords. Soon there was blood all over and when Harvinder’s brother jatinder and worker Viki tried to intervene they too were beaten up. When other members of the market saw all this they were very agitated and they tried to catch the attackers who tried to flee from here by firing in the air.”

The shop keepers of the area maintained that,“The Sikh Students Federations were formed to protect the Sikhs and not attack them. In case these people had a grouse, they could have complained to the police or at least first talked. But they preferred to attack with an intention to kill. The Sikh youth should boycott this federation.”
