The Joint Industrial Forum, consisting of more than 36 associations,on Thursday staged a protest lasting about five hours at Vishvkarma Chowk against the new notification of the Excise and Taxation Department under which online transaction of upto Rs 2 lakh has been made mandatory for sale of goods within Punjab.
Earlier, chief parliamentary secretary (sales tax) Sarup Singla had promised to get this notification withdrawn but Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, during his recent visit to the city, categorically stated that it would not be withdrawn.
Interestingly, this notification has to be implemented from August 10 onwards, but till now not even a single industrialist has got himself registered with the Excise Department. Gurmeet Singh Kular, president of United Cycles Parts and Manufacturers Association, said they would not get themselves registered at all and would meet Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on this issue.
However, the protest took a political turn when former minister Satpal Gosain came to support the industrialists and gave a speech asking them to form a traders brigade. Minutes after he left,Congress MLA Surinder Dawar came to address the industrialists.
