Vet varsity rusticates one, suspends two others for brawl

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has rusticated one student and suspended two others for indulging in a brawl in the university hostel.

The Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has rusticated one student and suspended two others for indulging in a brawl in the university hostel. Action against the fourth student has not been taken yet as he is recuperating in a Patiala hospital. Interestingly, the case has brought to light the misuse of ragging laws.

The incident occurred in Hostel Number 8 on January 23,when a few boys of the first and senior year entered into a brawl. The first year student,Prabhpreet Singh, who was injured in the clash lodged a complaint of ragging against his seniors and his classmates but the probe found the complaint to be false. Harkanwal Singh Grewal,a second-year student of fishery sciences, who had beaten up Prabhpreet has been expelled from the university and two students of second year belonging to the College of Dairy Sciences have been debarred from attending the current semester. Apart from this, the three classmates of Prabhpreet,is currently recuperating at Rajindera Hospital, have been put on conduct probation (warning).

Dr KS Sandhu,Director Students’ Welfare, said,“Prabhpreet told us that some of his classmates in connivance with the senior had ragged him and thus injured him. However, the catch was how his classmates could rag him. We asked the students around and found that the complainant and the other boys were having drinks and during the process entered into a brawl.”

Dr Sandhu added,“The anti-ragging laws are being grossly misused these days so much so that the first year students are dictating terms to seniors in the garb of the new laws. We have certain reports where a first year girl student, who was finding some problem in getting a room, threatened her senior to adjust with her or face the charges of ragging.”

A police case at Sarabha Nagar police station has also been lodged.
