New Commissioner of Police P S Gill on Monday said Shimlapuri police arrested a notorious drug smuggler along with his accomplice and recovered 19 quintal poppy husk from his possession on Sunday late night.
The accused were carrying the contraband in a truck,hidden under the sacks of cattle feed.
The accused are Kuldeep Singh alias Pappu,54,of Janta Nagar and Jagtar Singh alias Tar,40,of Chet Singh Nagar. A case under sections 15,61,85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against them. The drugs recovered are estimated to be worth Rs 20 lakh.
Addressing the media for the first time,the Police Commissioner said the accused confessed that they smuggled the contraband from Madhya Pradesh.
In another case in division number 4,police arrested Jagga Ram of Pritam Nagar with 5 kg poppy husk on Sunday. Police recovered 50 gm heroin and 200 gm opium from three accused at Middha Chowk. The accused arrested with heroin have been identified as Balwinder Singh of Jalandhar,Mohan,a resident of Uttar Pradesh,and Bhupinder Singh of Daba road.
In the third case,the Salem Tabri police arrested Surinder Kaur and recovered 2 kg poppy husk from her possession. She is from New Ashok Nagar.
