The forthcoming academic session has a pleasant surprise in store for the students of Panjab University with some major changes expected in the regular mess menu. The authorities at the campus have decided to have a specialised menu besides the regular mess food with a proposal on a special kitchen where hostellers would be able to cook. These facilities will be available at a nominal fee.

The decision comes following several complaints by students at the campus over age-old menus being followed. Finally, the authorities have decided to modify the menus. Talking to Newsline,Prof Naval Kishore,Dean Students Welfare said,”We have planned a lot of changes in the new academic session and the final modalities are being worked out. Besides altering the menu we also intend on sending the mess cooks to hotel management institutes to learn different ways of cooking for the food to appear more sumptuous. Presentation is very important so we would train the cooks on that as well.”

If all goes well students can expect major changes in the existing menu. The authorities further plan to hold sample tests of the food being served at the mess. Prof Naval also said special care will be taken in the new session on the conditions under which the food is prepared since students at the hostels have complained of low standards of hygiene in the past.

“We would hold frequent checks of food samples and in case of any deficiency the mess owners will be fined accordingly. Also,a nutritionist would visit the hostel far more frequently to enable planning of students’ diet,” added Prof Naval Kishore.
