A major fire broke out in three godowns of the Sportking Synthetic unit last night near Sahnewal on the Ludhiana-Khanna highway.

A number of fire tenders from the city and adjoining towns were pressed into service and it took firemen more than eight hours to contain the raging inferno.

According to sources in the fire brigade department,the blaze started around 11.45 pm on Saturday and engulfed all the three main godowns including the packing section of the mill.

When the blaze broke out,one unit of the mill was still working. Sources said the fire was so massive that flames could be seen from several kilometres away. Speaking to mediapersons,Sportking Group of Industries Chief Managing Director Raj Awasthi said the loss could not be assessed in exact terms yet but it ran into crores of rupees.

He said the situation could have been worse had it not been for the good fire fighting arrangements at the godowns. The firm provided five lakh litres of water from its tanks to the fire tenders.
