With sand being sold at high prices,Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari on Monday issued orders stating farmers and retailers cannot sell sand above the rates fixed by the state government at auctions. The DC has admitted that buyers are paying more than they should for the commodity.
Even I have observed that consumers are being fleeced while contractors had agreed to the conditions at the time of getting their contracts. Sand is costlier even at quarry point what to talk of rates in retail market, Tiwari said. The DCs order will remain in force till November 20.
A 100 square feet trolley of sand, however,is still being sold for anything between Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,500 in the retail market against the Rs 750 rate fixed by state government. A 300 square feet trolley of sand should cost Rs 750 at quarry point but the rates are not less than Rs 1,200 at quarry point and in retail market it is being sold for not less than Rs 2,500.
Tiwari, however, maintains that after the issuance of the order, the rates will be re-set and those who dont comply will be penalised. The sand retailers state they cannot sell the commodity at the government approved prices due to various expenses involved in the business. In the past, they had even refused to supply sand to customers who demanded it at the government rates.
