Poor seeking free treatment at PGI now need to get clearance every 6 months

PGI director had taken a decision that all poor patients will be reviewed on January 1 and July 1 each year.

Assuming that the financial status of a person might change after six months, the PGI administration has made a rule wherein poor patients receiving free treatment under the BPL category have to get fresh recommendation from doctors every six months.

The PGI director had taken a decision in March 2014 that all poor patients will be reviewed on January 1 and July 1 each year, when they have to present their documents afresh to seek free treatment at PGI.

However, the implementation of such a rule will create trouble for hundreds of poor people who have to go from pillar to post to get one-time clearance for availing benefits under the schemes for the poor.

As per the circular, “The validity of the poor free card is coterminous with the General OPD registration schedule, that is for six months, from January 1 to June 30, and from July 1 to December 31”.

“The circular issued by the PGI director in March was not acted upon in July 2014, but the computerised system at PGI had deleted all ‘poor free’ recommendations,” said Ashwani Munjal, GS, Medical Technologists’ Association.
