With Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) failing to pay pensions to its 2,400 odd pensioners, the latter have now decided to pursue charges of contempt of court against the institute.
This was decided at a monthly meeting of PAU pensioners held at the Students Home today. The meeting was addressed by a well-known economist,Dr SS Johl, who too expressed concern over PAUs inability to pay its pensioners. Noteworthy here is that PAU pensioners have not received their pensions for the month of November and December.
SP Sharma, general secretary,PAU Pensioners Welfare Association, said,The issue of non payment of pension was hotly discussed at a meeting and there is a wide-spread resentment among the pensioners regarding the attitude of PAU,which does not own the responsibility about its failure to pay its pensioners and rather passes the buck on to the state government.
Sharma said,Our employer is the university and it is the duty of PAU to pay us. It is no use knocking the door of Punjab government. And because PAU is not obeying the directions given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2008 that it should clear all our dues we have decided to pursue contempt proceedings against PAU without any further delay.
In his talk,Dr SS Johl had clearly mentioned that the first duty of the university is disbursing pensions and then salaries. He told us that if we seek courts intervention,we will be granted immediate relief, added Sharma.
