Dr Manjit Singh Kang,Vice-Chancellor,Punjab Agricultural University, may not like political pressure exerted on him by the varsity employees, but when an opportunity arises to make the universitys case with the politicos he accepts it with alacrity.
It is learnt that the V-C has asked Ajmer Singh Lakhowal,Chairman,Punjab Mandi Board, and president,Bharatiya Kissan Union (Lakhowal),for a grant to repair roads at PAU. This request was put forward to Lakhowal recently when the latter was at the PAU to lay the foundation stone of technology and product sale center coming up at PAU .
When contacted,Lakhowal said,The V-C,Dr Kang wants us to give money for laying pre-mix for some roads. We had given some money for this task in 2001 also and recently a grant of Rs 10 crores to PAU. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had asked us to give Rs 10 crores to PAU and we did that. Apart from this,we had given some more money to PAU for research purposes also.
Lakhowal added,The money for construction of roads has to be given from the Rural Development Fund which is under the Chief Minister. I will be meeting the CM on February 15 and have invited Dr Kang also for this meeting. I will try and impress upon the CM to release the money and if this is not possible then PAU will have to wait till April. I will release some grant from my discretionary quota from the budget of next financial year.
Notable here is that in 2001,the then vice-chancellor,Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh had impressed upon the government to release a grant for construction and repair of roads in PAU from the Rural Development Fund. Dr Aulakh had claimed that PAU had a right on this fund for the development of villages which is the result of green revolution has come through PAU. Rural Development Fund is used to development of infrastructure like roads and others in villages.
