PAU all set to disburse pensions

The Punjab Agricultural University may tide over the pension crisis but just for the time being.

Crisis far from over, says university comptroller A C Rana

The Punjab Agricultural University may tide over the pension crisis but just for the time being. The university, which could face contempt of court if it fails to pay its pensioners their dues till March 31,has managed to deposit the required fund with the concerned banks for disbursement. In short, the university may pay the dues by the end of this fiscal but crisis looms large as the fund-scrapped university does not have money to continue with the pensions.

A C Rana, comptroller,PAU,said,”Abiding by the High Courts orders,we have deposited the required sum in the bank. The bank will start the disbursement of pension accordingly.”

He added,”We have been able to raise the money from our pension fund.” The comptroller was, however,at loss when asked as to how the university would continue paying its pensioners post the deadline of March 31.

Rana remarked,”We will do something and try raising more funds. But yes,the crisis is far from over.”

The university has been struggling to pay its pensioners their monthly dues since November 2007. With more than 2,000 pensioners,it needs Rs 2 crore every month. Since 2007,the university has been able to pay its pensioners in fits and coughs which resulted in pensioners moving the high court last year.

The HC ordered the university and the state government to pay up or face contempt.

N K Pillai, secretary of the Confederation of the PAU Pensioners’ Association said,”PAU has cleared all our dues till February 2009 and we have been told that the situation is likely to stay good for another month so. We plan to meet our HC lawyer tomorrow and if PAU falters on our pensions, then filing a contempt case is the only option,” added Pillai.
