Adopting a tough stance against bullies, the Panjab University authorities have decided to expel any student found guilty of ragging from both hostel and the campus. A PU official said the decision will be soon extended to all PU-affiliated colleges.
Talking to Newsline,Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti said: “In the past,we have been lenient in certain cases wherein the deviation was of a mild nature. But no benefit of doubt would be granted from now on; no one found involved in ragging will be spared.”
The decision has been communicated to all hostel wardens, who have been directed by Dean Students’ Welfare Professor Naval Kishore to conduct regular inspections to check the menace in the new session.
Residents are elated by the decision. Sunita Kashyap, whose son is joining the University Institute of Engineering and Technology at PU,said: “Ragging is a reality in both hostels and classrooms now. I am happy the university is taking steps to save my child from such a hardship.”
In the current academic session, five ragging incidents were reported in PU while one was reported from the Hotel Management Institute,Sector 42. Six students of the Theatre department were expelled by the university while two UIET students were suspended from the department and expelled from the hostel.
