Panjab University on overhaul spree, introduces a host of features

In a move to enable its students experience a professional conduct, various departments at Panjab University have decided to switch over to a dress code. The forthcoming academic session will see the Department of Law and UILS follow the dress code once a week wherein students will be required to come in formals.

Commenting on the decision, department of Law Chairperson Prof P S Jaswal said,”The idea behing the move is to teach professional etiquettes to students. Once out of the department, they will be practicing and thus will have to be dressed in the formals. So,we at the department plan to introduce them to the formal environment.”

The department is already following the dress code during presentations. Students are required to come dressed with their coats on for all presentations as faculty also assesses them on their apparel for which they are marked. In case a student does not follow the code, marks are deducted. A similar code is also practiced at the UBS department where students come dressed in formals on Wednesdays whereas the Institute of Dental Science follows a system of formal dress code seven days a week.

Talking to Newsline,UBS student Nupur says,”We come dressed in formals to the department on Wednesdays and its a good break. Not only does it make us feel more responsible,it also gives a feel of the corporate world.” Adding to this,Neha another student quips,”It’s a good initiative and I believe at least the professional departments should follow this routine to give a feel of the professional world to its students.”

Interestingly, students of UBS and Dental Science departments who have been following a dress code have never revolted against the decision unlike the students at the Department of Law who had protested a similar proposal last year. The authorities had rolled back their decision last year after students had launched protests but this year the authorities seem to be in no mood to revert their decision under any circumstances.
