MC mulls privatising garbage disposal

Rs 90 lakh is the amount spent by Ludhiana MC every month in getting the garbage picked from various parts of the city and dumped in the garbage bins placed at various places.

Rs 90 lakh is the amount spent by Ludhiana MC every month in getting the garbage picked from various parts of the city and dumped in the garbage bins placed at various places. But despite that the city roads and streets in general remain littered.

SAD councillor Tanvir Singh Dhaliwal during the MC’s general house meeting has mooted a proposal which he says will end this menace. The proposal,he says,if implementted, will kill two birds with one stone: while it will help in sweeping the city clean,it will also drastically bring down the expenses incurred by the MC in maintaining cleanliness in ther city.

In the general house,Dhaliwal said,“As per the calculations,Rs 18 lakh will be spent on the entire process on monthly basis including fuel and salaries of private employees and hence corporation can save a huge sum on monthly basis.”

Giving details,he said,“If Rs 400 worth fuel is consumed per vehicle on daily basis, this expenditure will be Rs 9 lakh for one month, and salary of 2 employees (private) can be Rs 6,000 and hence Rs 4.5 lakh is another expenditure. Rs 4.5 lakh has been calculated as a cost of the vehicles and other expenses which totals into Rs 18 lakh per month.”

Dhaliwal says the money thus saved could be used by MC for other development works. The proposal has already been submitted to the commissioner,

Meanwhile the huge sum — Rs 90 lakh – spent on MC vehicles, including the diesel expenses, has raised eyebrows with many demanding probe into the allegations of diesel pilferage.

Even in the yesterday’s meeting, diesel theft by employees was pointed out by a few councillors with the commissioner,A.K Sinha saying that that he had recieved similar complaints in the past also and would like to get these investigated. It may mentioned that a few years ago as well, the vigilance bureau had taken the lid off a diesel scam in Ludhiana.
