Minister was scheduled to launch passport office

The last-minute cancellation of the visit of External Affairs Minister S M Krishna to Ludhiana on Friday for the formal inauguration of the passport office left the Congress party workers and the office staff high and dry.

Though the passport office is operational for quite some time, the formal opening of “second of its kind passport office in the country” where all facilities are made available under one roof was being planned as a big event.

Few lakh of rupees were spent for the minister’s welcome and a big pandal was erected outside the office complete with a huge stage.

Arrangements were made in a local city hotel for another function and a team of senior officials from Delhi and Chandigarh had reached city on Thursday to oversee the preparations.

Though the minister’s visit was cancelled on Thursday night, but only a few workers were informed till Friday morning as they started reaching the office for the meeting.

The official reason for the cancellation of the visit as cited by senior Congress leader Pawan Dewan was inclement weather, which according to him would have made the landing of aircraft at Sahnewal airport difficult. The Congress workers, however, said the minister could have taken train to reach the city as party general secretary Rahul Gandhi does.
