Over a year after the new management headed by Dr Abraham G Thomas took charge at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, dissatisfaction seems to be brewing among a few doctors holding key management and academic positions in the hospital as a few of them have already left the hospital in the recent past.
The exodus of the doctors from the hospital has now raised concerns among some employees of the hospital over a situation leading to shortage of experienced faculty members in the CMCH. As many as seven senior doctors have resigned from their academic posts and left the hospital recently, sources in the hospital have revealed. All these doctors were posted as the heads of their respective departments and units.
Meanwhile, some doctors holding the key management positions have also stepped down from their posts, they are however continuing as the faculty members of the college. Dr Sunil Singh, who was posted as the principal of the college has stepped down as the principal while Dr VP Singh,Deputy Medical Superintendent is also learned to have resigned from the post.
BM Fredrick, general secretary of Brown Memorial Hospital Employees Union, said he was distressed at the fact that many doctors had left the hospital and some others were also feeling suppressed with the way things were placed at the CMCH at present. We are highly concerned with this as it may lead to shortage of staff in the hospital. I would therefore request the governing body of the hospital which is meeting in September to look into the matter, he said.
I was really upset about a certain things in the hospital. The director of the hospital did not show any interest in providing advanced equipment in my department while some other doctors were being given a long rope even when they were doing treatment in a questionable manner, said a doctor, who was heading a department in the hospital,on condition of anonymity. I have now joined a good hospital and am impressed with the zeal of the management to introduce technological advancement, he added.
An employee of the hospital, also pledging anonymity said,We all are very unhappy with the way things are going in the hospital. I am also not satisfied with my job and would jump on any job opportunity at any other hospital.
Sources revealed the heads of the different departments who have left the hospital ever since the new management took shape in the hospital last year, included Dr Yashvir Dewan, department of Neurology,Dr Rohit Joshi,Department of Oncology,Dr Aruna Aggarwal, department of microbiology,Dr Rajesh Paul, department of Ortho,Dr Akashdeep,Department of Respiratory Medicine,Dr Sandeep Bakshi,Department of MRI Diagnostics and Dr Sanjay Gupta, department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.
When question on the issue,Dr Abraham G Thoman, the director of CMCH,said I am not aware of any such employees union (referring to Brown Hospital Employees Union) in the hospital since there is not any such registered body. As for Dr VP Singh,he has not resigned yet, Dr Thomas said. He further refused to answer the questions on the matter.
The current turn of events in the college has also resulted in a somewhat similar situation which existed a year ago when a struggle by the employees of the hospital, who were disgruntled over what they termed was bad management, had effected a change in the management last year. The current management team had taken over charge after months of struggle by the employees of the hospital seeking change in the management led by Dr John Pramod. The governing body of CMCH had dissolved the 10 member team in March last year and the new team led by Dr Abraham G Thomas was set up to be at the helm of affairs.
