The Vigilance Bureau today arrested patwari Vinod Kumar from Revenue Halqa at Otalan in Samrala red-handed for accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a Samrala resident.

The police said the accused had demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe from Kuldip Singh,a resident of Otalan,to update revenue records.

“The complainant did not want to pay the bribe so he approached the Vigilance Bureau. Acting on the complaint,a trap was laid and the patwari was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe money. The recovery was effected in the presence of official witnesses Jatinderpal Singh,ETO,Ludhiana,and Kuldip Chand,JE,PWD,Ludhiana,and Narinder Singh,shadow witness,”added Vigilance SSP S S Mand. A case has been registered.

PNB registers profit in north zone
The Punjab National Bank has registered a profit of Rs 3,905 crore in the financial year 2009-10. The bank did a total business of 40,000 crore in the last fiscal. This was disclosed by the bank managers of Punjab in a press conference held on Tuesday. The non-performing assets(NPA) ratio of the company has also improved.

Zila Parishad chief holds meeting
The meeting of the Zila Parishad was held on Tuesday in which sanitation project was discussed by its chairman Manpreet Ayali. He said dirty ponds of villages were being cleaned. He said many panchayats had been authorised to do a survey as to whether BPL families needed funds for the construction of toilets in their houses.

800 students gets scholarships
The Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust observed the 46th death anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru by distributing scholarships to the tune of Rs 150 lakh to more than 800 students. On this occasion,S C Aggarwal Chief Secretary,Government of Punjab,was the chief guest. Rakesh Bharti Mittal,president of the rust,distributed scholarship to the students and awards for the year.

Be prudent in use of water,appeals NGO
Rising Youth Association organised a lecture on water conservation here on Tuesday. Schoolchildren,villagers and members of PCMSRU were those among present. Gurinder Chahal,president of the association said they asked the villagers and schoolchildren to be prudent in use of water and electricity. It has been observed that people do not switch off fans and lights when they leave the room,taps are left running in public toilet,he said. He said water is one of the most precious natural resources. It becomes all the more valuable when it is processed to make it clean and fit for human consumption.

NGO to celebrate martyr Sukhdev’s birth anniversary on
To pay tributes to martyr Sukhdev,a district-level program is being organised under the aegis of People’s Movement,a non-governmental organisation,on May 14 at Arya College for Boys in the city. Disclosing this in a press conference,Sumer Kharbanda,Press Secretary of the NGO,said,“This event assumes great significance because shaheed Sukhdev was born in Ludhiana on May 15,1907. It was only due to the sacrifices and endeavours of freedom fighters that we are living in free India today.”

Children told about infection control practices
Continuing with its campaign to observe May as Infection Prevention Month,Satguru Partap Singh Apollo hospitals conveyed this message to students at the Guru Harikrishan Public School,Doraha on Tuesday. Infection Control Officer Muktanjali Arya conducted a training session for students and told them about infection control practices,hygiene and cough etiquettes. Students who performed well were given attractive prizes. A person dressed up as a bunny,accompanied by infection control nurse Charandeep,went around the hospital premises.
