The history of Khanna constituency changed in the 2012 assembly elections. As per the records since 1969,the same party forms the Government whose candidate wins from Khanna. However this has been reversed for the first time,while Congresss Gurkirat Kotli won from Khanna,the SAD-BJP alliance has got a clear majority in the assembly. As per the details available with ENS,in year 1969,SADs Naurang Singh won from Khanna and the same party came in majority in Punjab to form Government while in 1971 elections,Prithivi Singh of Congress won and it was the Congress Government in the state. In year 1977,SADs Bachan Singh Cheema defeated Congresss Shamsher Singh Dullo and Akali Dal government was in power while in year 1980,S.S Dullo won and Darbara Singh was the Congress Chief Minister in Punjab. Again in 1985,Sukhdev Singh Libra who was then in SAD came out victorious and Surjit Singh Barnala formed the SAD-BJP Government in the state as chief Minister. In year 1992,S.S Dullo again became victorious and it was Congress Government in power with Beant Singh as the Chief Minister while in year 1997,Bachan Singh Cheema was the SAD MLA from Khanna and the same Government was in power. The records of 2002,show that Harbans Kaur Dullo,wife of S.S Dullo from Congress won and the Government formed was of Congress only while in year 2007,SADs Bikramjit Singh Khalsa defeated S S Dullo and SAD-BJP Government came in power. When SAD-BJP created a history by making a come back,the Khanna history also had to be proven wrong this time,said the SAD supporters.
