Drunken drivers to face strict action, warns DIG

Farooqui remarked at a meeting on Friday,“Each year many people die as a result of drunken drivers.

Taking strict note against drunken drivers,DIG (Ludhiana Range) M F Farooqui cautioned that such persons would not be tolerated and that the police would ensure that such drivers are not only issued challans but also get their medical tests conducted and work towards getting their driving licenses cancelled.

Farooqui remarked at a meeting on Friday,“Each year many people die as a result of drunken drivers. The situation on the highways is even worst for the vehicles run at a high speed. The police personnel areas of Khanna,Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib which fall under my jurisdiction have been issued strict instructions to ensure that drunken driving is stopped. Those who want to drink while travelling will from now on ensure that they have a separate driver for their vehicles and he is not drinking.”

“I have asked my police officials to hold separate meetings with the owners of marriage palaces and hotels situated on the outskirts of the cities and towns. We want these palaces to ensure that boards conveying message against drunken driving are prominently displayed,” added Farooqui.

The DIG said that as per instructions issued by the DGP office,“The cops have initiated a drive against drug smuggling in the state which is also increasing the crime rate in the state. Earlier nabbing a drug peddler was enough but now police is tracking the pipe line and busting it and one success that we have landed recently is the arrest of Tej Partap,a Kurukshetra based drug smuggler who used to supply synthetic drugs in the state.”

The DIG ordered police officers to ensure that their behavior with the public is polite. “It is true that the public is scared to approach the cops for help. The police must reach out to the general public. They police will have to build confidence among the common man that their grievances will be heard. Recently I put an SHO posted in Khanna under suspension when we found his conduct in dealing with the general public not upto the mark. Cops must ensure that the aggrieved and victims get their due justice.”
