Docs save life with rare vascular surgery

Patient Gurcharan Singh from Phillaur, came to SPS Apollo Hospital,Ludhiana on October 6 with massive bleeding from his right groin area along with gangrene of the right foot.

Patient Gurcharan Singh (40) from Phillaur, came to SPS Apollo Hospital,Ludhiana on October 6 with massive bleeding from his right groin area along with gangrene of the right foot. The patient was a chronic drug addict who used to take injections in the main blood vessel of his leg called femoral artery.

The traditional treatment in this case is to fix the artery by sutures to stop bleeding and to do a bypass to save the leg from amputation by making a large cut on the abdomen.

“Opening the abdomen was not possible in this patient because of severe infection at the bleeding site,” said Dr Gaurav Singal,Senior Consultant in Vascular surgery.

He added,“The bleeding had to be stopped. Surgical bypass had to be done with an artificial tube in such a way that it did not get infected the leg.”

Dr Singal did this bypass from under the scrotum of the patient to save his life.

Dr Gaurav Singal further elaborated on the procedure and said that only few surgeries with this technique have been attempted before in the world.

Dr Kapil Chib,Medical Superintendent of the hospital said that many limbs and lives are lost every year because of lack of vascular expertise.
