Avon Cyclogreen, the 2013 edition of the eco-friendly campaign, was flagged off from Ludhiana by Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh and Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tewari on Sunday.

The campaign is supported by Big FM (the radio arm of Reliance broadcast network) and will extend to 42 cities to promote cycling at least once in a week.

“Cycling should be done by residents in the inner lanes of the city where four-wheelers cause more congestion. It will promote the habit of cycling. As of now,on the main roads,it is risky to ride a bicycle in the absence of any dedicated bicycle lanes,” the Police Commissioner told Ludhiana Newsline.

He added that the project of making bicycle lanes on main roads would be studied along with the Deputy Commissioner.

Singh said,“At least for doing things near by,one should go on a bicycle. People add carbon emissions to the environment even for going less than a km away.”

He asked the industrialists to improve the quality of reflectors attached to the bicycles so that on the roads during night hours, the reflectors should make the cycles visible. “In a number of accidents in which migrants riding bicycles died,it was found that the reflectors were not attached to many models,or they were of very poor quality.”

The Police Commissioner added,“The old city area, colonies like Model Town Extension,BRS Nagar,Dugri are safe for riding bicycles.”
