The Defence personnel are fast emerging as the new pool of management aspirants at the University Institute of Applied Management Studies (UIAMS),Panjab University. The department has received requests from both Chandimandir in Panchkula and Defence base in Shimla, asking for admissions to their off-campus management courses.
Taking note of the request, the department has also asked for an increase in 100 seats,in addition to the already existing 400 for off-campus management courses. Interestingly, the department already has a 5 per cent quota reserved for defence personnel.
Talking to Newsline,Director of the department Prof A K Saihjpal said,We have received several requests from defence quarters suggesting that their personnel want to pursue a career in management. We have, therefore, asked for an increase in the number of existing seats.
The proposal for increase in seats will be discussed at the Syndicate meeting scheduled for Saturday.
Those seeking admissions will be given points based on their experience, with every year of job experience to fetch two marks.
Owing to the huge demand of defence persons in management institutes, said Prof Saihjpal, they want to pursue careers in management.
The defence personnel seeking admissions at UIAMS have to be recommended by the Head of the Army/Services,as required by the service norms. The candidates will thereafter be put through a selection procedure,to be jointly conducted by the Army and faculty from UIAMS.
