In what may snowball into a major embarrassment for the Congress in Punjab, party spokesperson and Lok Sabha candidate from Ludhiana,Manish Tewari, today said the 1992 government in Punjab was formed by default.
His remarks, though made in another context, bring into focus the fact that Congress rise to power in 1992 was precipitated by the Akali boycott of the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections that year.
Tewari committed the faux pas while trying to justify his tirade against SAD-BJP candidate and two-time Congress MP from the city,Gurcharan Singh Galib,at a press meet held to launch the Congress election manifesto titled Vision for Ludhiana.
Charging Galib with not doing anything for the development of Ludhiana during his tenure,Tewari said if elected,he would work for the betterment of the constituency.
When asked why the Congress chose to give a ticket to Galib again despite his laziness,Tewari, unaware of the significance of his words, answered: Galib was elected by default in 1992 as the state government was formed by default that year. At the time of the next elections, the party wanted to provide another chance for Galib to prove himself and gave him a ticket.
As the media further prodded Tewari asking why the Congress gave Galib a ticket on four occasions 1992 and 1999 (when he won) as well as 1989 and 1998 (when he lost) he was visibly fumbling over words.
