Computer equipment lying idle for 16 yrs in this office

The District Bureau of Employment Generation and Training,it seems,is trapped in a time warp.

The District Bureau of Employment Generation and Training,it seems,is trapped in a time warp. Even in this computer age,its employees continue to scribble on registers for maintaining day-to-day record. Interestingly, this department is under Parkash Singh Badal, the Chief Minister of Punjab.

For the department, which sends letters to many organizations as well as to the unemployed persons other than doing routine office work,it is a very time consuming exercise.

Daljeet Inderjit Kaur,Deputy Director of District Bureau of Employment Generation and Training, said,“It was in 1992,when Government of India sent us a computer hardware of HCL company and asked us to make it operational by loading required software. We have been waiting for the software since then, which is to be provided by the state government.’’

The computer hardware is lying as it is in this office as the state government could not equip it with the software. When asked as if there is any hope of getting the software in near future, the Deputy Director said,“We hope to get it during this year as it is ready and is on testing stage.”

The department has to keep the record of employees working in different government organisations and private organisations. For this, the department writes letters to all the organisations to send the total number of their employees along with male and female ratio. The employment officer said,“We daily write more than 100 letters to these organisations but it is a matter of grave concern that many government as well as small private organizations do not respond despite our repeated reminders.”

She said,“The District Bureau of Employment Generation and Training,Ludhiana, has succeeded in providing employment to more than 400 persons during this year through skill development initiative scheme of the government. The unemployed youth have been trained in different skills like retail management, nursery training, vocational training, computer operatorship etc.”
