Powerloom workers on strike,seek increased wages
More than 600 workers of powerloom factories in Geeta Nagar have started their strike from today. The protesting workers want rates revision and a hike in salaries on a par with the workers of Shakti Nagar powerloom factories. It needs to be mentioned that more than 500 workers of Shakti Nagar had gone on strike for more than two weeks and later they were given some hike in salary structure ranging from Rs 500-1500 per month.
Industry hails VAT refund decision
The Ludhiana industry has welcomed the cabinet decision of 75 per cent refund of VAT without depositing C and H forms and the rest will be given once the paper work is complete. United Cycles Parts and Manufacturers Association,Federation of Associations of Small Industries of India and many others have welcomed the step. The members said that it was a long pending demand which has been accepted today.
Sanjay Sharma is Cong Sewa Dal vice-president
Sanjay Sharma has been appointed as the senior vice-president of Congress Sewa Dal (rural cell). He was earlier secretary of the same rural cell. Rajinder Rasrania,President,Punjab Pradesh Congress Sewa Dal congratulated Sharma. Gurnam Singh Kler,former President of Congress Sewa Dal,Ludhiana,Karnail Singh Tatla and many others also congratulated Sharma over his new appointment.
Plantation drive held at Rishi Nagar
The Society for Welfare of Education and Environment Protection (SWEEP),a registered NGO,organised a tree plantation campaign in Rishi Nagar today. The secretary of the society,Dr Manisha said,Environmental pollution has posed a major threat to human lives so everyone should plant more trees.
The campaign was presided over by professor Rajinder Bhandari vice-chairman of planning commission,Punjab government. Amarjit Singh,treasurer of the society also encouraged the children to celebrate their birthday by planting one tree.
60 attend workshop on English
A workshop was organized on Effective English Language Teaching by Oxford University Press,at Kundan Vidya Mandir,Civil Lines. It was conducted by an experienced ELT expert,Gayatri Khanna,who is presently a consultant and a resource person in the CBSE and NCERT for the Advocacy Programme on CCE. The workshop was attended by more than 60 members of the English teaching fraternity from various schools across Ludhiana.
Strike by joint council of trade unions in city
The joint council of trade unions today did a chakka jam for about three hours at the Bharat Nagar chowk to protest against price rise. The traffic,however,made the common man suffer because commuters had to take detours to reach their respective destinations. Meanwhile,58 per cent staff of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) was also on strike. A total of 380 complaints were registered of which 208 had been attended till the time of filing the report and the rest were still to be attended to. Chief Engineer P S Gill said,They will be cleared in a few hours. In Pakhowal road colonies,the power supply remained disrupted for 6 hours due to staff shortage while in Haibowal more than 5-hour breakdown was reported in many colonies. Public sector bank employees also joined the strike.
Lecture on nurition held
Bhutta College of Education organised an extension lecture on Nutritional Requirements of Indian Adults for Healthy Living during the orientation session on September 7.The resource person Dr Sapna Nanda,Assistant Professor in Food and Nutrition,Government College of Education,Sector 20D,Chandigarh,appraised the students of nutritionally adequate diet,dietary goals and importance of diet in various stages of life. She also suggested dietary guidelines and guided the audience about,balanced diet.
