Many have heard him through Yeh duniya agar mil bhee jaye to kya hai from the Guru Dutt’s Pyasa or the Barsaat Ki raat’s unforgettable qawwali or the prayer. Ishwar allah tere naam from Naya Rasta or the Main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon from Kabhi Kabhi. The list of his famous poetry is endless but in his home town,he is a forgotten man.
While his poetry lives on,the garden which was once created as a tribute to this great Urdu poet and one of most successful Bollywood lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi lies in a state of utter neglect. Welcome to Guliastan-e-Sahir. Situated on the premises of SCD Government College — the alma mater of Sahir– the fact that such a garden exists is not known to many.
Sahir Ludhianvi was born into a wealthy family in 1921. His parents did not share a good relationship and Sahir was brought up by his mother. The house,in which this bachelor was born,is situated in Karimpura,a Muslim neighborhood of the city. Sahir completed his schooling from Khalsa High School and later joined SCD Government College. This was in late 30s and by 1941,Sahir was thrown out of the college. The tales of his expulsions are many. Like some say that he was thrown out for sitting in the college lawn with female friends while the other tale is that he recited couplets for a girl who took offence and reported the matter to the college principal.
Apart from the garden, there is also an auditorium dedicated in the memory of the great poet. Bhupinder Aziz Parihar,a well known Urdu poet and also the lecturer in the same college recalls,”I joined this college in the 80s. This garden was created by well known Urdu poet Baljit Singh Sajjad. A flowriculturist from PAU had developed a variety of flowers which he had named as Gull-e-Sahir. Just like this garden, the flower too seems to have been buried under the layers of time.”
