Emaho,an initiative by youngsters to promote photography, has found followers from over 23 countries
Rejections in a profession often lead one to think of alternate plans either change the course of career or find ways to fulfill what the heart desires. Delhi-based Manik Katyal chose the latter. I wanted to showcase my photographs on an international platform but most well-known galleries rejected my work, though not on grounds of quality but on experience. It was then that I decided to start my own portal, says this 23-year-old as he clicks on to the Facebook link of the Photography on Street and Travel (POST). POST is a series of exhibitions put together by Katyals group,Emaho, that works to promote young and deserving photographers from across the world.
The first edition of POST is due to be held in Singapore on February 10 and will see 50 selected entries on display. Weve got over 2,700 entries and a following of 7,300 from 23 countries. It is like social networking sites have brought together photography lovers from across the world, Katyal explains. Not just amateurs but celebrated photographers including Australia-based photographer Sam Harris,Majid Sayeed from Kabul,Mahmadieh Mirhabibi from Iran,Nafise Motlaq from Kuala Lampur and Mimi Mitsou from Italy are also part of the debut exhibition. Entries are currently open to anyone over the age of 15 years and can be submitted on their website or uploaded on the Facebook page before January 25.
With no entry fee,the selected works will also be put up in Delhi for sale and all the revenues collected from it will go to the artist, without any cuts or commission, informs Emaho member Arunesh Moudgil,an alumnus of SD College,Chandigarh.
A photo walk to promote this exhibition, called The last moments of 2011,conducted in Philippines on December 31,and saw a good response. The second walk scheduled for Islamabad,Pakistan, next month already has a good number of confirmed entries.
We are overwhelmed with the response and have decided to take the exhibition to different countries, team member Mallika Chabba, who completed her graduation from Chandigarhs Government College of Arts, pitches in.
Future plans for Emaho include promoting 50 photographers every six months and Dubai has been chosen as the next venue for the exhibition.
We are shortlisting places around the world that appreciate photography, such as Singapore where photography is the first hobby of people, Chabbal adds.
