3 workers killed in wall collapse; two booked

The deceased have been identified as Ramu,35,Manohar Lal,38,and Ram Lal,40.

Independent councillor Randhir Singh Sibia and contractor Nirmal Singh were booked on Friday afternoon after three workers died while they were digging the illegal basement of one SCO near Jalandhar bypass and the wall of an adjoining building collapsed on them.

The deceased have been identified as Ramu,35,Manohar Lal,38,and Ram Lal,40. All of them lived in Harikrishan Vihar.

Though an inquiry has been ordered to know the details of the building plan and the cause of the accident, sources said the basement was not allowed in this SCO.

SHO Dharampal Singh said,“Preliminary investigation says that digging was too deep which damaged the adjoining wall. Hence the accident. The bodies will be handed over to the families after post-mortem tomorrow.”

ADCP Nilambari Jagdale, the officer incharge of the area, said,“We have booked the councillor as well as the contractor but they are absconding, and we are conducting raids. An FIR under Section 304-A (accidental death) has been lodged.”

SDM Ajay Sood, who is conducting an inquiry, said,“We will be finding details as to whether the plan was approved or not and whether the basement was allowed to be constructed or not. The details have been sought from the market committee on whose land the construction was being done.”

Sibia was a SAD leader earlier, but he was denied ticket in the last year’s corporation elections after which he contested as an Independent candidate.
