With the arrest of one person, the Ludhiana police claim to have solved the murder of former Youth Congress leader Vicky Rana, the body of whom was found near the Big Baazar shopping mall on the Jalandhar Road on March 2. The arrested, identified as Sanjeev Kumar, works as an auto-rickshaw driver. Kumars brother-in-law,Vipin,is absconding.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday,Senior Superintendent of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill said Sanjeev and Vipin killed Vicky on the evening of March 1.
Vickys body was discovered the next morning and Salem Tabri police registered a murder case against unidentified persons on the complaint of Vickys brother Vijay Rana.
In his statement to the police,Vijay had pointed the needle of suspicion towards two residents of Sandhu Nagar, the same locality where the deceased resided. But during investigations, they were found innocent, said Superintendent of Police (Detective) Surinder Kalia.
Working on another theory, the police zeroed in on two more persons,Sanjeev and Vipin, who were members of the same association as the deceased.
On further investigation, the police discovered that the accused had several monetary dealings with the victim.
Kumar was arrested and confessed to the crime during questioning. The two had killed Vicky as he was not refunding money taken from Vipin, said Gill.
Sanjeev told the police that on March 1,they gave Vicky a drug-laced drink and after he feel unconscious, the two took him towards Phillaur on a motorcycle. At a secluded place on the way, they bludgeoned Vicky to death with a stone.
Now,efforts are on to trace Vipin, added the SSP.
