Away from the limelight, the state Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has begun a systematic exercise to identify the potential young candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The move comes after AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi made a proposal at the Congress Working Committee meeting on January 29,saying the party should give 30 per cent of tickets for the Lok Sabha election to the youth.
On the lines of the parent organisation, the IYC has appointed several in-charges for all the 80 Lok Sabha seats. Each of them has been asked to collect the resume of the eligible candidates and send them to Lucknow.
The resumes should contain information about the candidates educational background, social initiatives taken in the past,if they ever raised their voice on local issues and participated in the youth congress activities.
We are collecting this information from across the country and the main criterion is that they should be young and educated and have the zeal to work for society, said Ashok Tawar, president of IYC.
The state units have been asked to submit the information as soon as possible so that it can be scrutinised, he added.
In Lucknow, the CVs that have been collected so far include MBAs,engineers, and former presidents of the student unions of various universities. State IYC president Yogesh Dixit said: All I can say is that we are doing as asked by our national unit. We will send the names in a few days.
Although information is being collected from all the 80 seats, there are around 25 potential candidates which the state IYC is really serious about. Some of these seats are: Muzaffarnagar,Mirzapur,Saharanpur,Sitapur,Etah,Allahabad,Chitrakoot and some constituencies of Bundelkhand.
Twenty-six-year-old Narendra Srivastava, who has been working in Lalitpur and Jhansi districts of Bundelkhand for over a year now,is conducting house-to-house survey of the implementation of various central schemes. He has been invited by Rahul Gandhi for a meeting in New Delhi on February 3.
Cong announces candidate for Bhadoi by-poll
As an answer to unilateral announcement of Lok Sabha candidates by Samajwadi Party, the Congress on Monday announced its candidate for the Bhadoi assembly seat for the upcoming by-polls on February 26. The party has fielded Suresh Gautam as its candidate. This will not be a friendly fight in any case as Gautam is a scheduled caste, which would certainly cut into SPs vote-bank, said a Congress leader. Plus, after the friendship with Kalyan Singh, the Congress candidate will also get the benefit of the minority votes. This seat fell vacant after BSP legislator Archana Saroj expired on October 2008.
