Display of watercolours with an unusual style
Is it the symmetry, the colour scheme,or the strokes what is it that gives paintings by Shefali Bhatnagar the distinct look that tells you they are all by her?
It is my signature style, she smiles and shows you what she means. Every speck of white you see in the paintings (all watercolours) is not white colour but the white of the paper sheet on which the painting is made.
You look again and spot every white trace in the paintings,an exhibition of which was inaugurated at the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi gallery in Aliganj on Tuesday. And everything whitebe it a sitting cow,the white shirt of a fruit bazaar shopper,or petals of chrysanthemum amazes and evokes curiosity about the technique.
It is the use of masking fluid that helps some parts of the sheet remain white as I use different strokes to colour the painting, says Bharadwaj, not one to keep any secrets about her signature style.
The exhibition comprises an eclectic mix of subjects and it is childlike simplicity of expression makes the paintings interesting, endearing and sometimes riveting. It takes me up to 22 hours to finish one work and I sketch and paint using my imagination rather than placing the canvas board at a location or behind a subject. The smudgy effect you see in some of the scenes is to denote the blur of recalling and recreating visions in the mind, says the artist, who has taught Drawing and Painting as a Reader in an Aligarh college affilliated to the Agra University. The exhibits are also up for sale and prices are available on request.
(The exhibition is on till Dec 20,11 AM to 7 PM daily)
