A wanted criminal,identified as Shamim,was killed in an encounter and a station house officer was injured in the crossfire on Monday night,the Ghaziabad police said.
According to the police,six cases were registered against Shamim in Ghaziabad besides several others in Delhi. The police had also announced a reward of Rs 15,000 for anyone who provided information leading to his arrest.
Shamim was also the prime accused in a burglary case reported from the house of a retired professor of Jamia Millia Islamia,Mohini Anjum,in February,the police said.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (Ghaziabad) Raghubir Lal,the police were on a look out for Shamim after they received a call about a motorcycle being stolen. Around 11.30 pm we received a message on the wireless that a motorcycle (TVS Apache) was stolen. The checking to nab the robbers started soon after that, the SSP said.
Link Road Station House Officer Rashid Ali,who was leading a search team,received information that the robbers were headed towards Pusta Hindon on the stolen motorcycle,following which Ali informed Indirapuram police Station House Officer Rajesh Diwedi. Around 12.30 am,the robbers were surrounded by the Link Road and Indirapuram police. As the looters attempted to escape,they lost balance and the motorcycle fell,the police said.
Scared,Shamim opened fire at Link Road SHO,Rashid Ali,who was injured. In the crossfire that followed,Shamim was killed and his accomplice managed to flee, Superintendent of Police (City) A K Vijayta said.
Ali was admitted to Yashoda Hospital and Shamim was sent to MMJ District Hospital.
The doctors said that Alis condition is stable. Shamim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. We recovered one countrymade pistol and motorcycle, Lal said.
