Notorious gangster killed in shootout with Uttar Pradesh Police

The Uttar Pradesh Police gunned down a notorious gangster, with a bounty of Rs 1 lakh placed on his head, in an encounter early on Friday.

The gangster, Vinod Kumar Upadhyay, had criminal cases against him in several districts with charges ranging from murder to violations of UP Gangsters Act, UP Goonda Act, forgery, and cheating.

Special Task Force Circle Officer Deepak Kumar Singh said that the sleuths have seized firearms from Upadhyay, following the encounter in Sultanpur district.

Upadhyay had unsuccessfully contested the 2007 Assembly election from Gorakhpur on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket.

A native of Gorakhpur, Upadhyay had cases against him in Gorakhpur, Basti, and Sant Kabir Nagar districts.

On Thursday night, the police zeroed in on the gangster at Kotwali Dehat area of Sultanpur following a tipoff.

According to police, the force surrounded the suspected location and spotted Upadhyay on Friday early morning. “Upon seeing the police, Upadhyay opened fire. In retaliation, the police also fired, leaving Upadhyay fatally injured. Upadhyay was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. No policemen were injured in the cross-fire,” said an officer.

Upadhyay’s death marks the 195th encounter killing since the Yogi Adityanath government came to power in Uttar Pradesh in March 2017. Additionally, 5,945 criminals have been injured in encounters during this period, while 17 police personnel have lost their lives.
