Vijay eyeing a big victory

Reputed golfer Vijay Kumar is happy with his current form and is eagerly looking for a big victory.

Reputed golfer Vijay Kumar is happy with his current form and is eagerly looking for a big victory. Though Vijay won the PGTI Feeder Tour event at Lucknow Golf Club on Thursday but he is looking forward for big victories away from home.

In a candid chat with The Indian Express after the victory,Vijay said,“ You get the real taste of victory when you win outside home (Lucknow). Of course,I am happy but I would have been more happy had I won this tournament elsewhere. Moreover, this tourney was for those who are outside the top 60 bracket. I and Sanjay Kumar were given special entry despite we being in the top 60 as Lucknow Golf Club were the hosts for this sixth event of the Feeder Tour. After the second round in which I was tied-second,I always knew that I had a good chance of winning in this tournament.” “Though I am satisfied with my current form and have been doing well but a big title has eluded me for almost a year. I had won the Haryana Open in October 2010 and after that a I had been able to occupy the second and third spot in championships on a couple of occasions. I really want to win a big title now. I will be fully focussing on the PGTI Players Championship be held at Mewat,Haryana from August 23 to 26 and will be going all out there,“ said the former Indian Open champion.

Praise for caddies

Vijay who is himself a caddie-turn-pro said that caddies are full of talent in the sport. “Being in constant touch with the course, they often guide the professionals. So when they take the club in hand, they do well. Take the case of Lucknow Golf Club. About 12 caddies here are full of talent.” Vijay said that many caddies despite being full of talent are unable to showcase their skill due to financial constraints as golf is an expensive sport. “Rajesh Kumar Rawat who is leader in the 2011-PGTI Feeder Tour Order of Merit today is also a caddie and is very talented”,he explained.

Seniors happy

Ram Avtar who is the senior most caddie at the Lucknow Golf Club is happy that the players from the Club are shining but he minces no words in saying that being a caddie is only a part-time job. “I am around 70 now and I took to this job about 52 years ago. But when I had more energy,I did other jobs as well. When my temporary job as a ward boy ended,I even worked as a mason besides being a caddie.”

Ram Asrey,60,popularly known as ‘Shera Rawat’ is another senior caddie. “I took to the job when I was just 12. At that time I used to get Rs 1 per day and now I earn Rs 50 daily. My two sons Arun Kumar Rawat and Kishan Kumar Rawat play golf. I too loved golf but got a chance to play it only at a tournament organised for caddies recently. Its nice to see the caddies turn professionals.”
