Doctor in UP’s Sultanpur booked on rape charges

The doctor was arrested after a woman rescued following a suicide attempt told the police that he had physical relations with her for two years under the pretext of marriage.

A 38-year-old doctor in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman for the past two years under the pretext of marriage. The doctor was arrested after the woman was rescued following a suicide attempt, the police said on Wednesday.

Dr Azad Khan was booked on charges of rape and produced before a local court which sent him to judicial custody, a police officer said.

The woman, who is a Hindu, is pursuing her graduation in Lucknow. According to the police, on Monday, locals spotted her jumping into the Gomti River. Nearby divers promptly rescued her, and the police also reached the scene. She was rushed to a hospital where she was given medical aid. During questioning, the woman informed the police that Khan had been sexually harassing her for two years and had recently refused to marry her.

The police arrested Khan after he allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory response to their questions.
