The two-day trials for selecting the India team for the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship to be held at Pune began at the weight-lifting hall of the KD Singh Babu Stadium,Lucknow on Thursday. The Commonwealth Championship is slated to organised from December 7 to 12.
About 150 powerlifters reported for the trials on day-one. Many international and national level players are also taking part in the trials. Secretary UP Powerlifting Association PK Srivastava informed,The trials are being organised in the senior,junior and sub-junior sections. A fifteen-day camp of the Indian team probables will be organised either at Delhi or at Pune prior to the prestigious event. Today,the trials were organised primarily for girls/ women. The trials will resume from 8.00 am on Friday. The selection process in both the male and female sections is expected to be completed by 2.30 pm.
GBN powerlifters protest
About five powerlifters of Gautam Budh Nagar (GBN) were not allowed to appear for the trials on Thursday. When contacted Gautam Budh Nagar powerlifter and coach Dinesh Yadav protested, The Ghaziabad team has been debarred from appearing in any tourneys and trials for one year as its powerlifters resorted to indiscipline during the State Powerlifting Championship held at Agra in July this year. But unfortunately,the Gautam Budh Nagar powerlifters are also not being allowed to appear in the trials for no fault of theirs.
I have been a national champion while two other playersDeepak Tewaria and Pankaj Singh are internationals another player Amar Singh is a national level player. We had good chances of getting selected in the team. However,secretary UPPA PK Srivastava claimed,All these powerlifters practice at the same place. Moreover,majority of them belong to Pilakwa area of Ghaziabad. It was only in the interest of the sport that we were allowing them to appear for Gautam Budh Nagar district. On the issue that no written statement had been issued to them regarding their suspension,Srivastava said,If they have not received it,they will get it soon. The letters were sent by post.
Lucknow under-19 team announced
THE Trial for talent under-19 team of Lucknow was selected at Northern Railway Stadium,Lucknow on Wednesday. The trials were organised under the auspices of Cricketing Talent Foundation of India (CTFI). The selected team will be participating in a training camp to be held at Allahabad from September 12. Matches will also be organised between teams of Agra,Aligarh,Allahabad and Lucknow. According to organising secretary of the trials Sambhav Jain,A total of 14 selected players each from Agra,Allahabad,Aligarh and Lucknow will be participating in a four-day camp at Allahabad. Matches will also be organised between the teams if the weather permits. Thereafter,the best four players will be selected who will be imparted training along with the other players of the CTFI,by renowned cricketers at Allahabad in October. If the talent is in good number,the number could increase. The CTFI will introduce its own in teams in tournaments to give talented players a chance, said Sambhav.
