After the successful completion of the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Badminton Tournament in December 2009 at the UP Badminton Academy in the state capital, the state badminton association is in an upbeat mood. For the young trainees of the Academy, seeing their favourite shuttlers like Olympian Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand in action has been a major source of inspiration.
In order to keep the momentum going, the UP Badminton Association (UPBA) has invited former French Open winner Aparna Popat to give valuable tips to the state shuttlers. Confirming the news, honorary secretary UPBA Vijai Sinha said,Yes,we have requested Olympian Aparna Popat to take out some time to give tips to the UP players and she has agreed. If she gets leave from her employers, she will be conducting a week-long camp at the badminton academy from next week.
As we want players of the entire state to benefit,we will ensure that not only the Academy trainees but talented players from across the state benefit from the camp. So once we are sure about Aparnas schedule,we will ask the promising players from different districts to also join and benefit from the camp.
It may be mentioned that in a similar effort, the UPBA had requested former All-England champion Pullela Gopichand during the mascot unveiling ceremony of the Modi Badminton and Gopichand had replied in the affirmative. So it is likely that Gopichand too takes out some time during the year for the state shuttlers.
Of late some young state shuttlers have done the state proud in various tournaments. Uttar Pradesh players like Sara Naqvi,Saneem Riyaz and Ansal Yadav won silver medals at the sub-junior national championships at Jaipur in 2009. Bareilly girl Sara who is training at UP Badminton Academy, has also been a quarter-finalist in the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championship 2009 and a pre-quarterfinalist in the Senior Nationals held at Guwahati in January,2010. In the Modi badminton, seventh seeded player Trupti Murgunde beat 14-year-old Sara 21-9,21-15 in her first round match.
