With the arrest of three persons on Saturday,the Mirzapur police claim to have unearthed a gang of auto-lifters allegedly being operated by Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Gyanpur,Vijay Mishra,and his nephew Prakash Chandra alias Munna.
Munna Mishra,Baikunthnath Dubey and Barrister Mishra were arrested in Kotwali Dehat area and three Bolero jeeps,an Indica car and a motorcycle were recovered from them,said police.
Mirzapur Superintendent of Police (SP) K Satya Narayan said that the MLA had been running the gang and providing shelter to its members for the last five years. The police are searching for Vijay Mishra and two other gang members – Arvind Pasi and Sunil Dubey.
Munna later told police that his uncle,Vijay Mishra,provide shelter to the gang members,while adding that the stolen vehicles are sold in Madhya Pradesh,Chhatisgarh,Jharkhand and Guwahati.
The MLA,a history-sheeter of Handiya police station in Allahabad,faces 34 criminal cases and has been on the run since April,2009 for reportedly lodging a fabricated FIR in Bhadohi district.
