Thief thrashed by locals dies

An unidentified man,who had allegedly entered a house to commit theft in Kareli area early today,succumbed to injuries after being beaten up by the people before being handed over to the police.

An unidentified man,who had allegedly entered a house to commit theft in Kareli area early today,succumbed to injuries after being beaten up by the people before being handed over to the police.

According to Superintendent of Police (City),Shailesh Yadav,at least three persons had sneaked into a house of one Ramesh Kumar Jaiswal,a resident of Naya Purwa locality in Kareli,around 3 am. As the thieves went about stealing items,two of his brothers — Rajendra and Narendra — woke up. They alerted the neighbours and soon several residents gathered. As the thieves decided to beat a hasty retreat,one of them was caught. The others managed to escape with some booty.

“They beat him up badly and then took him to the police at 4.30 am. Within 15 minutes,he was rushed to SRN hospital and his treatment was initiated around 5.15 am. However,he succumbed to injuries in the afternoon,” Yadav said.

A case under Sections 380 (theft),457 (house trespass with an intention to commit offence) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with life imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Kareli police station. Efforts are on to establish the identity of the deceased.
