State trials for sports hostels begin

The state level trials to select players for admission to state government run sports hostels commenced at various sports centres across UP on Thursday.

The state level trials to select players for admission to state government run sports hostels commenced at various sports centres across UP on Thursday. At Lucknow, hockey (boys),volleyball (girls),athletics (girls) and cricket (boys) under-14 and under-16 trials were organised. Players selected from the district and then the regional trials were entertained in these trials. While hockey, volleyball and athletics trials were conducted at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium, the cricket trials were held at Guru Govind Singh Sports College,Lucknow. On day-one of the two-day trials, the physical tests were conducted while skill tests will be on Friday.

As expected, the cricket trials witnessed good attendance with almost 15 players turning up from each of the 18 regions. In hockey, about 180 players reported at the venue while 60 girls turned up for the athletics trials. After these trials, central coaching camps will be organised in June and after that the list of selected players will be announced. However, what was very surprising was that only one player— Sakshi Chaudhary belonging to the under-14 age group, reported for the volleyball trials.

The girls volleyball hostel is at KD Singh ‘Babu’ Lucknow and it has produced a number of national and international level players in the past. The main reason for the poor attendance during the trials is the lack of coaches at this centre. “Why should parents send their children to a place where they are not getting any training. The volleyball girls have no coach for more than a year. Leave alone joining, girls are leaving the hostel as they feel that their careers have been ruined due to the absence of a coach,” said a sports official on condition of anonymity.

“The sports department authorities have to be really serious about the matter if they want an improvement in the state of affairs. The seats are more and the aspirants are very few”,he added.
