The murmurs regarding the low prize money of the highest state sports awards the Laxman and the Rani Laxmi Bai awards when these awards were given in September this year seem to have persuaded the sports directorate to consider the matter. A proposal regarding the same has been sent by the Sports Directorate which advocates the increase in prize money six times from the present one.
When contacted,AK Banoda, who is discharging the duties and liabilities of Director Sports (UP),confirmed that such a proposal has been sent and said if approved a new prize money would be given from the next financial year. The prize money for players occupying the first position in National Games and National Championships (individual events) is Rs 3 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, since 2005. Therefore, keeping this in mind,a proposal has been sent for an increase in the prize money of highest state sports awards. The proposal is for an increase from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh. An increase in these awards was made in 2003 when the prize money was increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 which is still existing.
Banoda said that if the prize money is increased it will be very encouraging for the players. Apart from one or two sports, majority of the players in dfferent sports are not financially strong,so an increased prize money for their achievements will be a source of inspiration for many others.
The Laxman/ Rani Laxmi Bai awards for the year 2008-09 and 2009-10 were given away at KD Singh Babu Stadium,Lucknow this year.
