State Cong slams door on SP

After winning 21 seats in Uttar Pradesh, the state Congress is of the opinion that the party should not enter into a tie-up with the SP,the BSP or the RLD — which had an electoral alliance with the BJP.

The unit will convey this to the party high command on Monday. “We have a consensus that we should maintain our distance from these parties who have left us in the past. I will personally convey this to senior leaders in Delhi,” said Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Sunday.

“We have contested against SP,BSP and BJP in this election. If we form a government with any one of them,it will harm us. Leaders and workers in the state believe that the party high command should be informed about our opinion,” she added.

Reacting to Chief Minister Mayawati’s remark on Saturday where she had blamed Congress,BJP and SP of conspiring against her,Joshi said: “Our suggestion to Mayawati is that she should stop day-dreaming. When the people of the state voted for her in 2007,they were being sensible. Now,when unhappy over her mis-governance,the same people have voted against her,she says they have been misguided.”

Joshi said the state workers will be happy to see AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi in the Cabinet, but then he might not be able to pay much attention to Uttar Pradesh.

“He has infused life in the state Congress. Today, the youth are with the Congress just because of him,” the UPCC president said.

With nine MPs in 2004,UP had two Congress members in the Central ministry. Now with 21 MPs,“we will request for the inclusion of five to six members in the ministry”,Joshi added.

She further said that 40 Congress candidates had received over 1 lakh votes,as compared to just 13 in 2004. “Congress candidates in eight constituencies had received over three lakh votes. These were Muradabad,Dhaurahra,Unnao,Rae Bareli,Amethi,Sultanpur,Barabanki, and Maharajganj,” Joshi said.
