SP winners frown at loser getting plum post

The appointment of Ujjwal Raman Singh, son of Allahabad MP and senior leader Reoti Raman Singh,as chairman of the UP Seed Development Corporation seems to have left a few sullen faces among the MLAs here.

The appointment of Ujjwal Raman Singh, son of Allahabad MP and senior leader Reoti Raman Singh,as chairman of the UP Seed Development Corporation seems to have left a few sullen faces among the MLAs here. The post has the rank of a cabinet minister.

Although the Samajwadi Party had won eight of the 12 Assembly seats in Allahabad, none of the MLAs found a place in the Akhilesh Yadav ministry. On the other hand,Ujjwal Raman Singh had lost the elections, albeit by a narrow margin, but was considered among the frontrunners for a ministerial post throughout. His father’s proximity with SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was often seen as a reason for the same.

“The issue of representation of the winning candidates from Allahabad in Lucknow is something that has been raised within the party from time to time. Everybody agrees that there is a need to accommodate people from Allahabad at higher positions. But nothing happened,” said one of the eight SP MLAs from the district on the condition of anonymity.

A close aide to another MLA said that there was no dearth of local leaders who could do justice to such a high post.

Among the hopefuls were Ansar Ahmed (Phaphamau),a minister during the previous SP regime,Haji Pervez Ahmed (City-South) who defeated BSP’s Nand Gopal Gupta “Nandi” and Saeed Ahmed, considered close to Azam Khan.

Speaking to The Indian Express,Singh said: “This is just a start. More people from Allahabad would get inducted at higher positions.”

Asked specifically whether Ujjwal’s appointment despite losing the elections was due to his father’s proximity with the SP supremo, the former minister said: “We are not privy to how the decisions are taken. I am not in a position to comment on that.”

However,Singh added, that most of the chiefs of corporations and other such bodies in the last six months have been those leaders who have lost the elections.

“The winning MLAs usually get into the ministry. Of course, accommodating all the people from the district is not easy because of the statutory cap on the size of the ministry,” said Singh.

He added that development was his only agenda for Allahabad and new projects were likely to be announced in the times to come.
