India’s Sourabh Varma continued his giant-killing run at the Syed Modi Memorial Grand Prix Badminton Championship, when he defeated seventh seed Yun Hu of Hong Kong 23-21,21-19 in the mens singles quarterfinals in Lucknow on Thursday.
The win, which lasted ten minutes short of an hour, comes at the back of Sourabhs upset defeat of fourth seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in the pre-quarterfinals. The 21-17,21-17 win in the last-16 stage had lasted just 38 minutes.
Unlike Sourabh, younger sibling Sameer Varma lost 21-12,21-13 to Hong Kongs Wing Ki Wong, the fifth seed,in a last eight clash.
The defeat left Sourabh the lone Indian in the mens draw. In the semis,he will face Suppanyu Avihingsanon, the 16th seed of Thailand.
In the mixed doubles section,V Diju and Jwala Gutta, seeded fourth, defeated Wai Hong Wong and Hoi Wah Chau of Hong Kong 21-8,21-16 to secure a berth in the semis.
It was not all good news for the Indian contingent as Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon of Malaysia outclassed Aparna Balan and Siki Reddy of India 21-17,21-5 in a matter of 33 minutes,to put an end to Indias hopes in womens doubles. The defeat of Sindhu and Neha Pandit on Thursday had earlier left the womens singles draw bereft of Indian presence.
