RASHTRIYA SWAYAMSEVAK Sangh (RSS) Sah Sarkaryawah Dattatreya Hosabale has asked volunteers from Awadh region to do “sewa karya” (service) the whole year while celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of third sarsanghchalak, late Madhukar Dattatraya Deoras.
Dattatreya was in Lucknow since January 16 to review the functioning of different wings of RSS and hold a coordination meeting in Awadh Prant. In meetings that concluded on Tuesday, sources said, Hosabale asked volunteers to observe the year as ‘Sewa Varsh’ to help Dalits and deprived sections of the society. They would work in slums and in areas where Dalits and those deprived of basic facilities like education and medical services live.
As part of the campaign, RSS has already asked its volunteers across the country to adopt at least one Dalit family, mingle with its members, dine with them and bring them to the mainstream.
An RSS office-bearer present at the meeting said that usually, swayamsevaks do ‘sewa’ every Thursday. They run cleanliness campaigns in slums and other areas. “But we have now been asked to do sewa karya every day. We have to hold free medical camps and teach in slums. We also have to provide skill development training to the youth,” he added.
He further said that volunteers, who are doctors, are supposed to hold free medical camps and distribute free medicines. “If no doctor is available, we will approach other doctors and request them to spend some time in slums and other localities at least once a week,” the office-bearer said.
Similarly, volunteers who are teachers, would teach children in slums or other localities for free. They would also distribute books. “The idea behind extending sewa work is to send a message that RSS does not only want to bring Dalits and deprived sections of the society into the mainstream but is also committed in helping them get a healthy life and basic education,” said the RSS leader. RSS shakhas are being held in at least 1,100 places in around 215 nagars in the Awadh region. A nagar unit has a population of 10,000.
