THE Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of an international cricket stadium and a tourism complex at Saifai in Etawah — the native village of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
While the stadium will be constructed at an estimated expenditure of Rs 260 crore and have a capacity to accommodate 40,000 people, the budgetary provision for the tourism complex will be made in the supplementary budget to be placed in the upcoming monsoon session of the state Assembly later this month.
Asked about the reason behind the construction of a tourism complex, an official said: “While there is a Lion Safari in the region, Saifai Mohatasava takes place every year. Now, even an international cricket stadium is on cards. Many visitors are expected, thus, a tourism complex with facilities of air-conditioned rooms and dormitory is needed.”

Saifai already has an international-level sports complex. Sources said that work for the international cricket stadium had begun in 2006 when Mulayam Singh Yadav was the chief minister. But the project could not be completed and later got stuck following alleged anomalies in construction work.
The government has now decided to breathe new life into the project.
In an another decision, the Cabinet cleared Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill-2015, which will be placed before the assembly.
According to the amendments proposed in the Act, sale and purchase of land owned by members belonging to the Scheduled Caste will now become easier.
Earlier, a SC owner could not sell his land to anyone apart from a person belonging his caste without prior permission of the district magistrate. Moreover, even the district magistrate was not authorised to give his approval if the land in question was less than 1.26 hectares.
