Two among a gang of seven robbers were lynched by villagers when they were trying to escape with Rs 6.2 lakh cash and a Bolero vehicle from a mining royalty check-post in Behat area of Saharanpur Monday morning.
Saharanpur Additional SP (Rural) Anil Kumar Mishra said the police could only recover the Bolero run by the check-post,which was allotted to the Mining Department by a private agency. He added that the robbers had arrived in a Maruti Gypsy that they left behind.
He said the robbers attacked the royalty check-post around 6 am and escaped with the cash and vehicle.
All police stations were alerted to lay a trap on Muzaffarnagar Road which the robbers were seen taking. The ASP added that the village head of Khadlana was informed that the robbers were headed towards the village.
The villagers gathered and blocked the road by placing tractors and other vehicles,Mishra said. The robbers left the Bolero vehicle after they spotted the villagers and took shelter in cane fields. The villagers,however,surrounded the fields and overpowered two of them while others managed to escape.
